I just found something new to me in the lashup section of the Legacy 1.5 manual (page 62).

When lashing LEGACY engines with different top speeds, the SPEEDLIMIT is automatically determined by the slowest engine in the consist. The engine speed is determined by the MAXSPEED value that resides in the engine module. The engines in the consist must be loaded with a module to utilize this feature. (emphasis mine)

I was under the impression that when you defined an engine manually (without using an Orange module) all the information on the module can be entered manually.  I didn’t know there was a MAXSPEED value contained in the module.

Three questions.

  1. Does anyone know of a way to manually enter the MAXSPEED for a Legacy engine?  And if so how do you determine it?  Page 62 is the only place MAXSPEED is mentioned in the manual.
  2. What’s the implication of lashing up two different engines without using the Orange modules given this MAXSPEED setting?  I’m going to lashup my NKP 765 and the NKP Heritage ES44AC (#8100) I just received to recreate 765’s trip over the Rockville bridge.
  3. Are there any other values contained in the Orange modules that cannot be manually entered?

I was thinking that the absence of Orange modules in newer engines was just an annoyance but now without a sensor track it seems that you WILL NOT be able to take advantage of this feature.  I wonder if there are any other similar features?

I have heard that certain engines have a lower maximum speed than others, but I've never had occasion to MU any of them.  I believe I read that once, but didn't think much of it as there was no talk back then of eliminating orange modules.

I'll bet you could probably tweak it with the LSU, or they'll be adding the capability to do that if this comes up.
