I have an older model TMCC system and it's actually still new. I really have not used it as I was not happy with the speed control, etc. I got it just to test stuff.

I am considering getting into Legacy by Christmas and to be honest I don't know much about it. If I get a second hand system, is there a way to know what version it is? I mean, I would prefer the newest and the most up to date. Should I just get brand new? I've been very happy with Lionel standing behind their products anyways. Is the newest version 3?

I would wait until the new batch from Lionel reaches the shelves.  Earlier versions had issues with the charging circuit.  A new version would most likely have that corrected.

The software revision in the Legacy unit is not an issue.  As others have stated, Lionel releases the software on their website.  You simply download the software and install it into the base unit and the remote.  To update the Legacy software will require you to also purchase a Legacy Black Module.  They run around 19.95.  Many people buy two but you can do the upgrade with just one module.  These modules are re-usable so its a once time purchase.  You will also need a computer with a serial port.  If your computer does not have a serial port, you will need to get a Serial to USB adapter.  They can be had on Amazon.Com for as little as 10 (it all depends on which one you select).

And of course, just so we won't get the comments from the Peanut Gallery, you can also create the writable modules from a couple of your existing blue ones from previous updates.

Come on you guys. Every one gets credit for helping.

I dragged my feet for a couple of years now. I got a old (but mint) TMCC cab 1 instead just to test stuff. Now I have to learn all this stuff and they release L1 lite version. I've got another option. That should take up another year or two.

Meantime, I can learn how to use and upgrade this stuff that I still don't have. Hoping Santa comes loaded with extras....

Anyways, thanks.
