Some awesome work by everyone. Reading the forum has given me courage to start my first bash project. Below is my progress so far. It has a long way to go.
Once it it gets done, it will be tmcc controlled with sounds and lights and a moving turret. If all goes to plan.

Here are a few shots of an Atlas gondola that I cut down and turned into a spare truck/crane tender car. It's part of a custom-build Jersey Central wreck train project that I've been slowly working on over time, and was the very first railcar kitbash project I ever attempted!

Daniel, really nice work! Could you please share some details regarding how you did the four-wheel pilot on your Berk? I've wanted to try this but there just doesn't seem to be enough space between the front driver and the steamchest. I have an old 736 that I'd like to bash into a 4-8-2 K-class mountain engine.
I thought that I needed a Canadian Pacific type observation/vista-dome car so I cobbled this together from a couple of roofs.

Daniel, really nice work! Could you please share some details regarding how you did the four-wheel pilot on your Berk? I've wanted to try this but there just doesn't seem to be enough space between the front driver and the steamchest. I have an old 736 that I'd like to bash into a 4-8-2 K-class mountain engine.
Rich, the first method that I tried was to hog out some room for the rear wheels and shorten the truck wheel base. I made a new plate from brass and sorted things around until it worked. The method that I used on 6153 (and the method that I have used since) requires cutting the centre of the steam-chest out and moving it forward and J-B Welding it back together. Because of the different type of truck on 6153 I had to move it quite a bit forward and alter the truck as well. This method also requires fitting longer piston shafts etc. but eliminates hogging out material and puts the steam cylinders closer to their proper position. There are other cosmetic issues to address depending on how accurate you wish to be.
When I get to the store tomorrow I will try and get some close-ups of 6153's pilot.

Now that's a neat car; very well done.
20+ years ago I had a PW 2531 beater shell cut by a buddy to install a dome, offset like the CZ which is where I probably got the idea in the first place. Posted this photo previously, but it seems appropriate here.
I'm going to try my hand at doing this to a smooth-sided 15" LIONEL aluminum car as an addition to a NP North Coast Limited train I did years ago.

More pics of the Berk conversion. First is my bog standard method of cutting along the inside of the stairs back to front and across, sort of following the 'natural' cut line (I think the pics show this). The section across at the bottom of the stairs is very thin and only has to be scored and broken off to remove the centre section for re-attachment. An standard truck is used with only some minor bending alterations for fit but mounted to the chassis. Longer rods etc. added, this one will be redone into a CNR Mountain at some time so nothing cosmetic was done.
6153 is extensively modified. A scale truck was 'compressed' and modified to fit and the steam chests moved further forward and the boiler lengthened about 3/8 inch and the new boiler front added. The walk way is higher and the stack moved forward and all the rods etc. lengthened. As you have probably guessed by now I did not document its construction like I did 2317!

Daniel, thank you for taking the time to provide an explanation and some great pictures of your work! I probably will give the first procedure a try since it looks to fit my skill level, at least for now. Here are a couple of pics of my first attempt to model an N&W K-1 (most of the work involves the boiler front). On the next try I'd like to move the classification lights, swap the inner two sets of drivers (eccentric needs to be on the second set), possibly build a more correct tubular cow catcher, and get the pilot & trailing trucks right. BTW, what do you use to make the cuts on the steamchest?
That's a wicked looking beast! Looks like something for one of those role playing games. Very cool!
Are those Ninja Turtles on that thing? What is it any way, a photon cannon or something? It's cool looking whatever it is.

Try to do a stteamlined K1?
