Dollar Tree stores are selling Christmas House LED Light Sets that run off two 1.5 Volt AA batteries (with holder and on/off switch) for a dollar. They are available in sets of either red, white, yellow, or blue. Make sure you look at the circle showing the color lights in the package! Also in the smallest print size possible above the circle the color is stated. The lights are spaced 4 inches apart and the wire to the battery box is about 7 inches. The wire is shrink wrapped 1 inch from the tip of the LED. Opening the battery box is a challenge as you need a #0 phileps head screwdriver with a set of plyers on the shaft to get the thing out! Once the screw is out, the top pops off. The switch works pretty good. For a BUCK how can you go wrong? God bless those little Chinese children. The colors of these LEDs is nice.

How much do they cost at the dollar store?

Just kidding.   That drives my wife crazy when she comes back from the dollar store with miscellaneous arts and crafts supplies for the kids.  "Look at these neat markers I bought for the kids!" she says.  "Neat.  They'll enjoy those.  How much were they?"  I think it stopped being funny to her the first time.  The eye roll she gives me gets funnier every time.

I just edited the post....they have yellow also. I went back today and bought the store out. I plan to use them to light the interior of buildings among other uses. Will probably use a transformer at 3 volts DC as a bus line for them all so will not use the AA batteries. Also bought some 1 to 1.5 inch figures 3 for a dollar, that are appropriate for my General Steam engines and Madison cars.

Also available are LED candles that have screw-in bases 3 volt DC by two AA batteries. You can take the "flame" plastic cover off the LED. No switch...just screw in / out the bulb on this one. The LED is a large size.

Tip for wall-wart sourcing - of all types including phone chargers - make the circuit through your community visiting the Goodwill, Salvation Army, AmVets, Volunteers of America, Savers, and other charity shops/thrift shops/thrift stores/hospice shops.

The selection of wall-warts, AC adapters and power supplies is astounding and they are all about $1 each.  They have bins, baskets, boxes full of them, and you can usually find one for your current project and the next two, and lot of them are newer more efficient switching supplies.

I will pick one up sometimes that I only need the pigtail/plug or just the cube and wire.
