Hi everybody,

I have two Lionel Lionchief Plus 2.0 locomotives, The 120 Anniversary Santa Fe F3 Train set and the newly released Amtrak p42 50th Anniversary engine. I run both of them with my Legacy Cab2 remote under TMCC mode. Both engines have fan driven smoke. Now I have tried to see if I am able to control the smoke units with the Legacy Control System, but it does not appear that I can.  As a matter of fact,  My newest engine, the Amtrak p42, I could not get the smoke to turn on until I used the Bluetooth app.  Once I did that, It continued to function using the Legacy remote but I could not shut it off.  I tried to look up in the instructions, but they did not address it.  Do other more traditional TMCC engines that have smoke units be controlled by the cab2 or not? That is the smoke function I am talking about.

Thanks for the help

I have three LC+ 2.0 locomotives, a couple of the 0-6-0T switchers and a PRR RS3.  All of them work perfectly with TMCC, including smoke control.

Note that while LC+ 2.0 doesn't offer smoke intensity control, the smoke electronics does seem to have three steps, they just don't do anything.  Try turning off the smoke more than three times with TMCC and I think you'll find that it works just fine.  That threw me when I got the first LC+ 2.0 locomotive.

is there a key on the cab2 when I run it in TMCC mode?

Yes, what are buttons 8 and 9.

The old way, with CAB1, so that people could remember what buttons do, they had these plastic overlays you placed over the button area

Lionel 2911-70 Diesel Loco F-3 Cab-1 Overlay – Trainz

The CAB2 emulates the old way depending on mode. Example ID in CAB1 mode- notice ONLY numbers and you the operator have to remember what those numbers represent or do.

With CAB2 and properly selected TMCC mode for an engine you get the + and - symbols (as well as all the other function symbols) for turning ON or Turning OFF smoke.

Again, 8 or - depending on mode (same button) turns OFF smoke or if there are levels is minus one level increment each time pressed.

9 or + in TMCC mode turns smoke on if off, or if there are levels of smoke, each press increments up.

Again, the takeaway is, you may have to hit + or - keys (9,8 in CAB1 mode) multiple times if the engine has logical levels (typically 3) of smoke.

Edit, it's more of hitting the minus key multiple times to shut off- especially if the smoke is on the "high" logical setting. If smoke is already off, a single tap of + should turn it on, and multiple presses just increments up the smoke level to maximum.

From the manual, they cover this but in the TMCC section using CAB1. https://www.lionelsupport.com/...02%20Genesis_web.pdf

EDIT:

Again, this is why you may have to hit the 8  or -  key MULTIPLE times to fully turn off smoke because if it is at high from the app or other setting, then each button press only increments it. Turning on should normally require only one button press of + (because from off, the first on state is just one higher), however multiple presses might increase the logical smoke level, and thus affect turning off requiring multiple button presses.

Yes, I did not know which keys on the cab2 remote corresponded to controlling the smoke unit, the instruction manual for the engine does not cover any of that. It just basically tells you how to address the engine and that is about all.  I knew some combination of keys would do it, but did not know which ones until now, so thanks again to everyone who responded to my question(s)
