Does the tender have a what looks like a large silver washer on the axle ? If I recall, I think it uses that to as a sensor. ( sorry for the fuzzy description, it's been years since I've seen on in person)

Yes, it should chuff. If you get a steam hiss, but no chug, I have found that the most likely cause is the chug sensor (hall effect sensor) has been the problem. Check the 3 wires are connected to the 3 wires on the board. If no luck the sensor will probably need replacing.

It's definitely supposed to make lots of noise, I thought I had a video of mine somewhere but I can't find it, though I do have over 100 pictures of it here.

I'll take a video this weekend if I get a chance and post here if you'd like, just let me know.

Also check the round magnet lines up with the sensor. On one occasion I have seen the magnet work loose from the spline on the axle and shifted enough to not be in line. 

I have extra three wire sensors, I can mail you one if you email me your address.   Not too difficult to install you will have to pick out the old one and glue in the new one and connect to board,  looking left to right what are the color of the wires???

  They are good little engines and were released in 1989, using the same tooling as its prewar predecessors. The locomotive was the "cover girl" for the 1989 Toy Fair catalog.

Thanks for the reply Christopher and Yes it has the item mentioned on the axle.  I think it's in the electronics.  I have lots of suggestions above so I must do more research and check out the wires and sensor.

Will definenitly take you up on the offer of a sensor.  Not sure if I want to tackle that job.  Haven't really looked at that yet but will consider it.  Might need more info after i some looking on how hard it is to get at.  Might also consider taking it to Brassuer in Saginaw and let them handle the job.  Got to dig deeper into this.  Possibly a circuit board?????? not sure

Since you said you get 1 chuff when you switch direction, the board is most likely good.

That's refreshing to hear.  Might save me some money.  I will check out the other stuff mentioned possibly Friday.  Company in town all weekend so train room time is limited.  Most of the kids and adults could care less about trains because you can't tweet, text, watch a video, listen to music or interact with them.  Too bad they don't understand the art of building a layout.  There is so much skill involved in building one that people just like to watch it and don't realize the amount of time everyone puts in building it.  Model Railroading is the greatest hobby in the world and believe me I have many more hobbies than I need but they keep me busy.

Lary, the Railsounds switch on the bottom of the tender isn't in the "off" position is it?

I thought that turned off the chuffing sounds.

It is actually in the on position.  It gives a chuff and then a hiss of steam sound.  when I turn it off nothing happens so I guarantee that it is on.

Got to go, wife is bugging me about computer especially with all the company we got over here.  I guess I will try to stay off the rest of the day.  Don't need to be in the dog house.    LOL  actually turning it off for the rest of the day.  Got football to watch with the nephews and my kids.

Played with it this morning and Yes, I get one chuff and a hiss (sounds like steam) when it takes off forward or when I switch it to reverse.  Actually checked all the wires this morning and everything is connected.  I even took off all the wire twist caps and the wires are all wrapped together.  The 3 wires going to the Hall Sensor are connected to it also.  Seems none of the wires are disconnected.  I might have to contact member Martin Derouin who has extra sensors and get one from him.  I did find the circuit board on-line and see it is around $90. should I need one.  I just have to be positive it's the board or the sensor and purchase the proper item.  Then again the sensor is cheaper than a board no matter what the price of the sensor.

I appreciate all the info you have given me on this subject.  I know I can probably replace the board or the sensor with no major problems.

It seems you are right in my neighborhood and would you be interested in checking out this problem for me??  I see your Roseville and I'm Clinton Twp. Harper around 16 mile rd.  If possible we could hook up I would pay you to put in sensor.  Also would be interested in seeing your layout and I could show you my detailed 12x24 layout.

Let me know.  I'm retired and have most days free.

blue, yellow, green

Martin thank you very much for the offer of the sensor.  I did take you up on the offer today and had a great time at your house.  You showed me your layout and also how you are putting the led headlights in your engines and other electrical.  It was very kind of you to also install the new sensor in my O-6-0 engine while I wandered around your beautiful layout and I can't thank you enough for a job well done.  Now I guess I will just have to get you over to my house (since we live so close to each other) and show you my Lionel layout also.  It was fun talking to you today and learning about the products you use and of course you gave me all the info and a few parts to start me off in the right direction to installing my own bright headlights on my engines.  Today was a great experience.  Hope to see you soon again.

as for the others who participated in this forum I also thank you for your input and good information.

AND YES the little engine did chug on Martins layout and now it is back home chugging away on mine.
