My question concerns the Lionel 1631 prewar observation car.  I've seen one or two of these cars with the rear truck positioned at the extreme rear of the car almost totally under the rear passenger platform.  And then I've seen a few with the rear truck positioned about an inch forward of that previously mentioned. Does this rear truck have the option of two different positions?  Any help appreciated.

I have one of those sets.  There are a couple of holes punched in the floor which can be used, or you could make your own.  As a little kid I didn’t notice anything wrong.  As I got older I began to realize that all of the trucks are positioned wrong.  On the observation end the truck was either too far back or too far forward.  On the coaches and the other end of the observation car, the trucks are at the very end of the car.  Later on I accepted that these were toys meant to represent any passenger cars and were too low, narrow and short to be turned into anything close to prototypical.  Today these cars are displayed as what they really are, the first train my father gave me.
