Lionel 1664 2-4-2 Steam Engine Wiring

Thanks Rob, here is the E unit I have, maybe you can help out a little more with what color goes where. I am slow when it comes to electronics!

Yellow - brush 1
Blue - brush 2
Green - field winding
Black - contact sliders/rollers

Judging by Mike's photo, the 1664 is one of the few Lionel locomotives with one of the brushes grounded.
So the wiring is a bit different.
The wire from the outside contact of the four contact plate goes to the brush that is not grounded.
The remaining two wires go to the two ends of the field wires.

You can see that one brush holder has a protrusion that goes under one of the brush plate screws. This is the grounded brush.

I don't mention colors because there is no guarantee that the colors on your e-unit are "correct".
That written, it looks like the blue wire is soldered to that outside contact I mention above, and should go to the brush holder.

The pink wire that is already on the brush holder does not belong.

You may have to bend that e-unit lever to get the shell back on.
The 1664 would have originally had an e-unit with a straight lever.

The ground tab is sticking out too. You will probably have to bend it in (no big deal)
Power tab too.

Revised wiring:
Yellow - field winding
Blue - brush 1

Thanks for the information guys! So from the picture below The blue one would go to the ungrounded brush on the side. The Yellow and Green wires would go to each side of the motor field. Then the wire coming up from the pick-up's would tie into the blue wire? If I am correct with what you are saying!  Thanks again for all the help!

Not quite.
The wire from the pick up goes to the hot terminal (solder lug) on the side of the e-unit by the coil.
The hot terminal is the one that the lever switch does not contact in any position.

SO Rob, would I take the wire from the sliders and solder it to the same point as where the black wire is with a "T" out for the light?

Blue wire to non grounded brush

yellow and Green wire , one to each side if winding

pick up and black wire from e unit get soldered together on the left side of switch. With T off for head light.

Yeah, I forgot about the connection at the solder tab on the E-Unit.

Hi Rob and CW, I am still alittle confused where the wire from the pick ups solder too!

So I wired it up to the tab where the black wire goes and it just sits there and humms and then alittle smoke. any ideas?
