I found a box of old trains in my basement labeled “TRAINS”.  Of course I was curious and opened the box.  I found a #1666 steam engine with a #1689 tender, and an original #269 steamer.  I also found miscellaneous freight and passenger cars.  All seem to be from around the war era.  Can someone help me get some  facts on these sets and help me sort out what rolling stock belongs to what locomotive?  I can supply pictures if needed.

You might want to move this over to either the tinplate forum or the 027, 0 traditional forum.  Also, show us some pictures.  The Lionel 1666E/1666 was made both before and after WWII.  With a 1689 tender, it would have been prewar.  Is it Grey or Black?  What cars, etc?  269 is not a Lionel engine number.. Could it have been 260, 261,262,263,264,265 maybe?  These are all prewar engine's.  If it is a 675,671,726, it would be post war.  Again, Pictures would help!  To me, that is a nice find.

Great find.  You should see if the back half of  the 261E is in the box of trains somewhere, you might be able to put it back together.  You can get reproduction frames or find one on EBAY.

The 1666 should clean up nicely and make a good solid engine for you.

Let us know if you need help with them, will be happy to help you out.

Hi Jack Swanson, That's the wrong tender for the 1666; it looks like one for the Lionel Scout set.

Both are pictured here, with me, when my father had both the 1666 and the Scout, long time ago, when the trains and I were  new...

That is a correct tender for a 1666, it is a 2689.
The locomotive came with several different tenders.
I have that combination in set #1089, in the 1940 & 41 catalogs.
Came with 2677 gondola, 2679 boxcar, and 2682 caboose.

Thanks for that correction, CW. I wouldn't want to inform him incorrectly. Apparently, my personal experience was too narrow concerning the 1666. Good call!
