Lionel 1688 E won't run in reverse | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

I have been fussing with my 1688 E no reverse here is what I believe the problem is.

The e-unit is missing the return spring so it will activate the reverse function, I have to reset position by hand so it will reverse. Because of this I changed the wiring so the it only runs in one position.

I took the e-unit out and cleaned the engine and have it working in forward position only. It looks like I Will need to get a new spring so it will run in reverse then rewire back to original

I can not find the spring part number can anyone help or tell me if I am completely off in my diagnosis of the problem

I have a 1688E that I will not get a chance to work on for a while but I did look at it.It appears thet it is a vertical E unit and I don't think it has a spring it works by gravity like other e units of this type.You should bench test it take it out and hook up the coil to track power and see if it cycles.

clean the drum in the e unit, worse case scenario you may have to replace the drum

and the two finger unit and the four finger unit. Make sure the plunger cycles freely

as sometimes it sticks in the tube.
