FedEx man just delivered. This is the Santa Fe SD70ACe. From the catalog pictures I feel that the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy and the Northern Pacific units were better looking, but I am a sucker for all things Santa Fe.

First a side view.

Next a front/side view.

Finally a top rear view.

The paint is in an automotive gloss just like the real ones when they are new. The silver is large metal flake and has significant sparkle to it. I have not taken it apart yet. Probably will in the near future. Only gripe that I have is the significant play in the wheel sets. The movement brings the gears to their edge, so they can bind sometimes. Easily corrected, but still an annoyance.

Of course it is a complete fantasy scheme. However, I have several red/silver warbonnets, blue/yellow yellow bonnets, and zebra striped units, so it is nice to have something that looks a bit different.

Neither am I a millionaire. I limit train purchases to no more than two units a year and the combined cost cannot exceed $800.  These are just limitations I put on myself. With the GP30 and the SD70 this year I have spent $823, so I broke the rule a bit, but no more this year.

In the catalog the EMD unit was right with the BNSF units. Very nice looking unit.

Quick question for those who picked up these units, when listening to the Railsounds at idle I hear a faint random ticking noise.  Anyone else notice this ?  Is this sound particular to the Railsounds on this engine ?  I had the earlier D&RGW Heritage SD70ACe and dont recall hearing this sound before.

The "ticking" noise, as you describe it, is the pop off valves on the air tanks preventing the internal pressure from exceeding what the injection molded tanks can handle. this had to be done to ensure your locomotives continued to provide years of reliable revenues to your railroad! as result of the pop off valves it is less likely your loco will need to spend time in the backshop replacing air reservoirs. Pretty obvious these fantasy heritage units are not too popular; at least with members of the forum. Somebody must have bought them as Lionel made them. If there were not enough pre-orders they would have been dropped.

However, I am not sure if BNSF needs a heritage series. I was just by the yards in Seattle. Plenty of blue/yellow bonnets with "Santa Fe" on the hood, red/silver bonnets with "Santa Fe" or "BNSF" on the hoods, BN executive schemes, BN cascade green and black; some with numbers on the hood and others with the BN logo and "Burlington Northern" on the hood, heritage schemes I, II, and III and so on. At least the two predecessor railroads are very well represented.

I wonder if this is the same noise that the newer Gensets make while they are sitting before drowning out the annoying ticking with railsounds. Apparently, some owners say theirs don't do it even though their videos clearly have the ticking. And Lionel sort of admits it, but points out that the newer Gensets have other features that offset the ticking annoyance.
