Just checked their website, and yes both coal and oil burning versions are still available in 3-Rail. The 2-Rail Coal burner is sold out.
Trains that still run after 2 years....
NYC K-5 Pacific - essentially the Hudson's sire. (Including Pilot version.)
NYC H-10 Mikado - essentially the Berkshire's sire. (Including Pilot version.)
USRA Heavy Mountain.
Proper USRA Heavy Mallet - the 2-8-8-2 that everyone keeps offering in the USRA-based N&W Y-3 version. Enough of the Y-3 - the original design is needed - lots of RR's had them. Front-mounted pumps, 8-wheel tender, etc., as designed.
Pilot model PRR 6-4-4-6; NYC Niagara.
Baldwin cab (not the Centipedes) diesels - NYC, JC, GM&O - each had versions.
An operating model and a static model in 1:48th scale of a Mi-Jack Intermodal Container Cranewould be great. It would most likely need to have the legs made out of a heavier material to be sure that it has a low center of gravity.
It would be used to lift the new 40' Trailers on and off of flat cars.
There would have to be a new type of 1:48th scale intermodal container for the new crane to load and unload from intermodal well cars. The intermodal container would have to be a 1970 to 1999 common design. Intermodal containers have had such a high turn-over every 10 years that the designs and company names are mostly different.

I like your thinking on the NYC stuff, I would ad more Rutland steam or issue a greeen B&A Berkshire with the correct as delivered short tender
A LionChief Plus Berkshire like the 736. I would prefer P&LE or Boston and Albany but I'd buy any eastern road.
I also could go for a NYC H -10 Mikado

Justin,
From time to time the Sunset/3rd Rail models of the NP A Class 4-8-4s show up on eBay. I have one of their NP A4 models, and it had quite a few problems right out of the box. Scott Mann took it back, repaired it, and returned it to me, at no charge. Even after that, I still had to go thru the running gear in order to get it to run smoothly, prior to having it weathered. It certainly is a stunning looking model now, and finally does operate smoothly, but I still have to pay attention to keeping certain screws tight in the running gear.
Guess I am a ONE NOTE JOHNNIE here. I would like Lionel to consider designing more locomotive with the ability to run on 036 curves. The Recent SD40-2, is designed for 054. No reason that that locomotive couldn't have been designed for 036 and give an option for the semi-fixed pilot to those who are so inclined. From my point of view, you a marginalizing those of us who just don't have room for monster layouts. I would also think this would improve sales to a larger market.
This creeping trend towards "more scale" like appearance is shrinking opportunities for many of us. And I am posting this in the traditional Hirail, 027 and Traditional O Gauge forum on purpose. Those who prefer "Scale" models are certainly entitled to their opinions. As such are those of us on this side of the market.
Come on Lionel, think about the long term longevity of the market. I for one would like to see the hobby grow and not shrink into oblivion.

Lionel made an SD40 that operates best on O54.
If you want, you can operate it on O36.

A Legacy Burlington Northern SD40-2 , #1876 in Bicentennial colors. This would match the Burlington Northern U30C #1776 in Bicentennial colors that Lionel already produced several years ago. This pair together would fit right in with Lionel's current production of the American Freedom Train, as these engines actually pulled the AFT a few times(albeit some were ferry moves). Lionel already has the retooled SD40-2 shell.

If Lionel made "The Brick", that would be interesting. I don't even know what it's used for, but it's owned by Norfolk Southern and the cab is really long.

"The Brick" is used for track geometry measurements. It has no traction motors or prime mover. The double cab houses the needed computer equipment.

I would like to see the first EMD FT in the Southern colors with the 6100 road numbers. It was the first demo unit that was sold to Southern. I remember my Grandfather telling me about the one hour of time he got to learn his new responsibilities on this new engine as he transitioned from his responsibilities as a fireman on a steam engine to the diesel era.
I still have the instructions book he was given just before he made his first run in a new era.

Mostly...products that get released without issues so customers will be happy. This year shows in the high end BTO locomotives that they need to get their act together.
But from my point of view:
Nickel Plate Road No.587 Mikado with the 12-wheel Berkshire Tender, with the correct cowcatcher design and number boards above the classification lights
Re-releases of New York Central J3A unstreamlined Hudsons, Dreyfuss Hudsons, and L3A Mohawks, with the first two of them having option of a PT tender

And maybe even Lionmaster versions of the J3a Hudson as well. Since they're bringing the Lionmaster back now.
Along with Lionmaster Cab Forwards, too.
I'm going to be a little bold and say I'd like to see Lionel produce some new add on accessories for the lion chief Hogwarts express set, similar to what they did with the polar express set, with figures of characters, maybe a platform 9 and 3 quarters station. And as if that wasn't enough, here's the kicker...I'd like to see them also make a legacy Hogwarts express locomotive. In other words, I'd like their Hogwarts express line of items see the same treatment as their polar express items.
I haven't paid much attention to this topic and someone may have already requested it, but I would like to see Lionel bring back some of the conventional trains and accessories.
I'd like to see Lionel start reissuing the more popular conventional classics sets but with Lionchief. Also more 0-27/traditional offerings.
Boxcab electric with retooled body
Lionchief trolley with railsounds.
Dan Padova posted:...I would like to see Lionel bring back some of the conventional trains and accessories.
I second that.
And while we're on the subject of personal locomotive favorites, I'd like to see a Reading 2-8-0 Consolidation.
