I guess you'll have to record one Jim, I just skywired some power to a short track to shoot the videos.
You're awesome - it appears that you will make a lot of people happy. Thanks Again!
Well, since I don't have one, that's not going to happen. I'm sure that there is some others here that would like to hear the car in a train. And, maybe someone else could post a video.
A small flat spot makes a very distinctive rhythmic sound rolling through the night. Larger flat spots not so much.
Well, when I get my wiring for power completed, I'll be able to do a more complete test. In my thinking, the flat-spot audio is a bit busy, I think I'd have preferred it to have less of the other sounds so the flat-spot sound stands out a bit more. I guess you can't have it all.
OK, here's a drive-by with the audio on the locomotive disabled so you can hear the sound boxcar audio alone. I had to sky-wire some power to the tracks to get it going.
Is that the flat spot or the chuff of the steam loco? I know I'm asking the moon but can you do it with a diesel?
The audio of the locomotive is turned off as I stated in the previous post, the only sound effects you hear are from the PS-1 boxcar.
Double checking, not a fan of the flat spot. Thank You!
Yep, a trifle busy in the sounds for me as well.
Here’s a picture and a short video of my new Erie Lackawanna Flat Spot Boxcar in action on my layout.

Thank you John for taking the time to make the video. That sounds nothing like a flat spot to me! I guess one has to be there in person.
It doesn't sound much like a flat spot to me either Jim, more like a lot of noise! I think they went bananas with all the extra background noise in addition to the flat-spot sounds, really killed the effect.
John,
You are a class act! I really appreciate your knowledge and most importantly your willingness to share it with all of us. Thank you for your contributions to this forum.

Thanks Kevin.
John, if you are ever in St. Louis Mo, I would be happy to buy you a beer or whatever you favorite beverage is!
Gee, a few years ago I used to fly through there all the time on my way to Grand Rapids, but I don't routinely get anywhere now that I'm retired.
I would have to agree, the flat spot sound missed the mark. Should have a heavy metallic thud sound. Boom...Boom....Boom...Boom.
You do have to wonder who is picking the sounds for these cars? I think the pinnacle of their sound cars was the old Vision Line Tank Car sets, not only were the sounds better, but they also put sounds in two of the three cars of the set.
I wonder if the tinny sound is the result of a small speaker trying to deliver the sound. Perhaps we just aren't getting the lower frequencies with such a small speaker? I looked on the lionel website hoping the sound file would be available to listen to on larger speakers on the product page, but it's not.
John, I'm now imagining you creating the SuperSound amplifier board and speaker combo, which seems pretty easy to me if you're doing it
To the defense of Lionel on at least one account, I think the stations sounds on the 21" passenger cars is really good. Some of the recordings are a little corny but the flange squeal and clickity clack are pretty good and well timed. IMO
I have a few of the various cars but not the flat spot. I find that overall, when spread out within a train or multiple trains they do add more dimension to my trains beyond the engine sounds. I think part of the key is getting the adjustment right & volume.
I personally would like to hear more squealing & less clunking.
Most of the freight trains I've watch over the years have nearly a continuous clickety clack & squealing sound. Isn't there some way to incorporate real train sound into the layout with some type of recorder?

It's always easier under those circumstances!

Lots of the Lionel sounds are great, especially many of the Legacy steamers. We're just talking about this specific example.

Me too, and that comment was made for the last run of sound cars, apparently reception at the other end was not optimal since we didn't get it!

Sure there is, I just need to get the actual real trains sounds that are royalty free and I'll create one. I already have the sound card!

So your device, for lack of a better name, would need the recording added by you? It's not something someone else could do? What if someone gave you a video they recorded of an actual train?
Not at all, the sound board has a microSD card that anyone can update any and all of the sound clips it contains. You may have missed the thread that describes all of the features.
Finally, the Universal MP3 Sound Board Has Arrived
I guess I did miss it. Is it available?
Drop me an email, I still have a couple of the initial run available.
For those who are interested here is the Santa Fe version of the car.
When the car was in a consist I found that the wheels would be floating above the track, thus I put 2 1/2 ounces of weight over each bogie.
But alas, weight was not the issue. The couplers are shaped differently and don't mate well with other cars which is discussed in another thread. One nice thing about the couplers is that they stay coupled in a train. I have yet to have them open up when in a train that is being pulled.
When moving slowly the car sounds like is is being dragged along the track as the previous video shows. However, when moving a little faster it has the rhythmic clank sound along with squeaking and squealing.
Save for a couple of gripes, I am satisfied with the PS-1 sounds boxcar. The car's sounds complement well with the other sound cars that I have purchased in the past.

Thanks for those SIRT.
The "Freight Sounds" are very good! The "Flat Spot" has to go, it still sounds like a steam engine!

Nice job'. sounds good when properly presented'... A little like a chuff. But mixed in just the right spot in the consist I think it will be fine'.. Thanks for posting the videos'...
Wouldn't you know it...I ordered the NYC version of this updated freightsounds boxcar (from @MrMuffin'sTrains) and it wasn't delivered from Lionel with the others. A

Yeah, seems really exaggerated plus all that other noise added in. Thanks for the videos!
Irrespective of the sound being great or average, A+ on the road name!!!
Finally received one of the Flat Spots that I pre-ordered along with a couple of other items. I appreciate the detail on the 60' Box Cars. Can't wait to hear first hand!

I don't want to alarm you, but I don't see any control switches or the speaker holes, are you sure that's a sound car?
You are correct, I thought folks might enjoy images of some of the other new product. You can delete or I will be happy to remove if you don't think appropriate. JP
