Hi there,

I finally made a New Year's resolution to join O-Gauge Railroading forum. I'm 39 years old and grew up with HO (Tyco Chattanooga). A few years ago, my elderly neighbors gave me a 1467W and 1473W set from 1950 and a 1467W set from 1952. My brother-in-law gave me his Allegheny set from 1971 and then my mother-in-law got my kids the Hallmark Santa Toymaker Express. So I got the nudge to change to O gauge!

In one of the boxes of things were two pre-war locomotives, a 226e and 229e. I got the 226e running, but the 229 was a basket case: the e-unit had the fingers broken and wires all over the place. I got new e-unit parts and wired the e unit based on where the original wires were previously. I was left with a few wires and don't know where they go, so I probably made a mistake somewhere. I was hoping someone could help me get this running again. I've attached a picture of what I have. The black wire from the brush holder and the green wire from the e-unit are where I get confused. Any replies would be much appreciated.

Thanks everyone. I connected the green wire to the brush holders and away she went! Probably has been years since it has run. I think part of my problem was when I put the e unit back into the engine frame, the plunger can't travel all the way to the bottom, like it is binding, so I'll have to deal with that. I appreciate the help!

Well, I posted too soon. The engine went around the track (O-45 circle) about 3 times and stopped. Now the e unit buzzes and cycles (plunger goes up and down when power applied or turned off). I can get the engine to sometimes go about 6 inches and then it stops. The direction lever is tight. The e-unit parts are all new and I checked the fingers to make sure they are not bent.

I rechecked all the solder joints and tried to check for any possible grounding out because it seems like the loco is shorting out. Is there anything else I should try that I am missing? Thanks so much.

I think I may have found the problem. I cleaned the commutator and the brush wells again and got no different results. I then started touching the solder joints and all connections. I noticed when I touched the brush wells, the engine moved. I saw a lot of arcing on the bottom brush well (is that what is called?). It was very loose, so I added some solder to the side to help stabilize it. (See picture below) It now has been running for 30 minutes without stopping!

I probably should get another brush plate if one is still available. Does anyone know the part number?

Again, thanks for the help to get this running.
