Is the black paint gloss black with dullcoat
or is the paint just dull from being about 70 years old? I am asking because I want to touch up the worn thru black paint on the roof edges and stacks without painting the locomotive sides if possible.

I think no matter what it is, you’ll end up with small spots of new paint that will stick out. I don’t think the paint dings look that bad.

Another way to fix this is to use a black permanent marker and then spray the entire shell with satin Rain-X. The Rain-X will soften out the mismatches in the color.
Thanks for the suggestions. I had some of the semi black from a previous project. I sprayed part of the top today. Pretty good match but I should have painted all the black. I also used the marker on a couple of areas not repainted. Pic enclosed
I would try a black Sharpie first. One of the local train shops taught me this (a very good shop). I did it on a couple of steam locomotives and was amazed.
My 2338 is dull too. I do not remember it ever being anything else. It has been in the family for about 60 years.
If you do touch up the paint you can blend in the sheen pretty well after it cures using a 3M finishing pad, similar to using 000 or 0000 steel wool. You could use steel wool too but I would avoid unless you have the shell off and nowhere near the rest of your trains.
