I have several of the postwar GP units, and I think they look best pulling either a string of 6464 cars or a string of the four bay open top hoppers. Just my opinion.

First of all, thanks to everyone for their comments.  I like the idea of box cars (6464) since that is what I have been using and looks great.  Plus, some of the cars in the original sets are pretty expensive.  But, who knows, maybe I will spend the money to get the cars from one of the two original sets.

I like the pics of your layout.  I just start collecting lionel in the last couple of years and have a big train table but now I want to create a layout.   Would you be willing to post or send me some additional pics of your layout? It looks nice andsomething that I think I can do.

If you decide to proceed with finding original cars, be aware that some of the cars, such as the 3435 aquarium car and 3512 fire car have variations. Might as well try for the correct ones.
