I did not see any comments in that other thread on whether the non-whistling tender coal pile had holes.

It seems to me that the holes in the original 2426W tender coal pile were cast, not drilled after molding. If so, then I doubt they would have cast separate coal piles for non-whistling tenders.

If it does exist, it would likely have a separate part number. Best to check the parts lists.

Update: The May 1941 Lionel parts list specifies that the 2226W and 2226T tenders both use the same coal pile, #226-3. The 2426 tenders are postwar carry overs of that tender.

A few years back I needed a replacement coal pile for a Modern Era semi-scale Hudson's tender. Those coal piles are the same size as the one on the 2426W tender. The Modern era coal pile did not have any holes. It was difficult to find. Most parts dealers only had 2426W coal piles with holes (probably reproduction).

I wonder whether FLHR05's tender has a replacement modern era coal pile.

I have the Fundimensions era re-issue of the 2426w, which cosmetically  identical to the post war version (diecast shell and all the same grab irons and railings, including the six stanchions on the rear deck) .

The only difference is the one being discussed here.  The coal pile in my reissue it is like that the OP is describing, in that it does not have any holes.  There are electrical/mechanical differences from the postwar version, the reissue has SOS instead of a motorized whistle and a basic standard coupler on the rear instead of a coil one.
