Hey there tinplate lovers!

Anyone interested in repair/restoration job for a Lionel 253?  It's a family heirloom and I'd love to get it working correctly.  I've got too many train/non-train projects going on right now and this one seems like something someone out there can do a better job than me on, plus of course I'd like for it to be done correctly and in a way so it's safe to run.

I took about 20 pictures which can be found here:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/...ms/72157669460813568

I'd prefer to keep the original paint on the shell (clean and wax), but I'm open for discussions on scope of restoration.  Heck, if someone could somehow put TMCC or a PS3 board in this thing I'd even love to talk to them about that, as this would make it easier to show off on my club's modular layout.

Prefer to pay via PayPal F&F, will ship to restorer via USPS.  I'd like to see pics of previous restores and/or references of some sort.  Timeline is fairly flexible too, as long as you provide regular progress updates.

Thanks in advance...Rich Murnane

p.s. if anyone sees anything else I should be noting, I'd appreciate them commenting here or emailing me.  I've never "farmed out" a job before and there are probably other things I should note.

p.s.s. I thought about buying a "donor" 253, heck even thought about buying a restored one and dropping this shell on it, but figured I'd ask here first.

p.s.s.s.  Yes, I realize it may not be economical to do this, but it was my dad's family's train so the value side of this is the heirloom side of things, so I'm OK with budget - within some sort of reason of course.

Easy-Peasy. I don't see any major problems. Needs 2 headlights, pantograph, and 1 roof rail. and re-wiring. looks like the wheels are still in good condition. I would call it a repair job, not a restoration as nothing is going to be repainted. But converting it to TMCC I would not recommend. I see problems with that, the shell would have to be insulated from the frame, for one thing.  2nd, with no ERR to get TMCC, boards  would be a problem.  Turn around time would be less than a week. no way would I touch the paint on that Rich..too nice. And price doesn't always matter with these old trains. I tried several places to get Dad's 6110 Scout running, only to be told to "junk it, it's not worth anything" Then Dad found Brausser's, and Dean did his magic on it.

I know I could get it running for you, but I've never messed with one of those, and I'm not big on E Units, let alone that kind of set up. I'm more of a forward only operator, so I have several dead E Units in a bin.

This looks like a very interesting project, and I could be very interested in working on it with you.

I've been comparing your photos with information in Greenberg's guide to prewar O gauge.  I see that you have the type 6 motor made in 1928-29, with a manual reverse.  Greenberg says that 1928 brushplates were red and 1929 were black, so that dates your engine to 1929.

You mentioned that you might have thougth of buying one to cannabilize foir parts  After a quick look on eBay at what's available now and recent sales, it looks like buying the parts would be cheaper.  I beleive all of the parts are available from dealers.  Cost might depend on how you feel about repro parts.  For some parts, originals are more work to find.

I don't know anythong about TMCC or PS3, but if you want remote reverse capability, it looks like there is room for an E-unit.  We could easily experiment with that.

A project like this needs some personal contact - too many nuances to deal with by email.. If you are interested, lets talk.
