I had never seen or even knew that Lionel had produced this item until now when I saw one at my local hobby shop. At first I thought that some previous owner had painted it this way but upon inspection I could see that the gray paint completely covered the entire metal surface inside as well as outside. At first I was not interested in purchasing it but then I thought would I ever see another one and since I have a collection of metal bumpers #26 and #260 each different from the other I did purchase it. The store owner told me that he had also purchased a Lionel Electronic Set with the bumper. Does anyone else have a Lionel factory painted gray #26 bumper?

It looks like you and I are the only ones who own what remains of the supply of #26 gray bumpers produced in 1948 only. I have asked my local train collector friends if they own any or know of anyone who does but no to both questions so I guess we have something rare today but the demand if any will set the actual selling price.

I have two kind of scratched ones in a junk box with old parts.   Didn't think they were all that hard to find.

It would be nice to see  a photo of one either way.  Sounds interesting.   Can't help but wonder what the reasons were for fluke things like this.   Could be that when Lionel went to make its run of the bumpers that year, it didn't have the brownish paint in stock and someone said... "hey, we have plenty of grey, use that!"
