Thanks for any help.

According to the "Lionel Replacement Parts Catalog" the 249E-20 Hub Plain Wheel and Tire and the 249E Plain Wheel and Tire were used on these locos: 238E, 249E, 259E, 262E, 263E, 2564E and 265E.

TMC74,

Just keep in mind that the wheels came in both thick and thin rim.  It is the same wheel, just the metal tyre was different.

So if you're buying a junker for parts...make sure the wheels are the ones you need.

Both the 249 and 265 came both ways (thick and thin rim).

You can easily tell the difference between the two, as the thick rim tyre has more sidewall to it.  The thin rim has no sidewall.

Echo Ives1122 on that. Early engines had the thick nickel rims. The service center replacement wheels that are often found are thick rimmed, but have a black oxide rim, instead of nickel.

Additionally, you would need to know if it has a crank pin or not. Front drivers don't have a crank pin, but rear drivers might. I have had 1935 Commodores that had all four drivers without crank pins, using a stud screw on the rear, but I've also had them with the crank pin cast into the wheel as well.

If buying originals, look carefully at the wheels or buy from a trusted source, where you can return them if need be. The wheels suffered the same zinc pest as other cast parts, and at least in my opinion, the thick rimmed versions suffered more.
