Ok so here's a sales pitch for Lionel..... I won this car on Ebay and thought it looked VERY nice!  But surely it wasn't as nice as it looked.  But low and behold..... the props are actually metal, and the supports are really wood!  It really looks nice and has some weight to it!

So if you were seeing this car and wondering.... YES its metal and YES its real wood!  Get it!  You won't be disappointed!

I may (read probably here) paint the deck of the flat car and add real chains and have a very nice railcar!

It would be quite easy to remove the load off the traditional flatcar and remount it on a scale flat. The propeller load would still look good. Also, in addition to the long scale flats, Lionel makes the shorter version scale flatcars as well, and the load would be fine on those, of course.

No, the date is always changed for each specific car to reflect its actual build date. You're correct about the additional detail, however. Lionel upgraded the molds on its traditional flatcars several years ago, and the newer cars have additional detail.

One easy way to tell the difference is to look at the steps at each end of the car. The newer molds (such as yours) have openings between each step. With the older molds, the areas between the steps are filled in.
