A pal of mine has a Lionel #2955 tanker with no lettering anywhere. It is dark grayish in color with slight rust spots on it. We couldn't see any signs of lettering anywhere. Anyone know anything about this?
Tnx

What sort of trucks does it have?
I suggest looking for signs of missing decals.
I recently picked up a set with a Lionel 2555 tank that had about 90 percent of the decals gone. Mine is silver with early postwar trucks. I've seen a fair number of those cars with their decals in varying states.
I don't see why something similar couldn't have happened to your friend's tank car.

Sounds similar, early postwar trucks. No hint of decals. Must of went thru many a car wash.
How tall is the dome. The pre war car had the taller dome found on the scale car. All the Post War cars had the shorter dome. Is your frame rubber stamped or are you going by the raised casting numbers on the frame? All of the post war cars have 2955 frames.

Shorter dome, raised castings.
It may be a later 2855 which was gray. These had 4 warning placards, one on each side and later coil coupler trucks. Decals would have been Sunoco on one side of dome and data on the other but no number which the others did have, 2755, black 2855, silver 2555 , etc.
Is the gray close to this one?

2955 is the number for the semi- scale die cast tank, using parts from the 715 scale tank. The only place it could rust is handrails and ladders. The 715 came as a kit, in grey primer. Maybe the 2955 did too?
these things are all over the map - my first 715 cost $15. I have TCA ads in my scrapbook showing a price of $1750.00 ! I got a pair with chopped couplers and repaint about ten years ago for $22.50 each. Greenberg had them at $800 or so for a while. The kits, at one point, were more valuable.
all opinion.
Yes, that is the gray color. tnx
One other identifying trait of both the 2855s is they had 4 corner steps like the pre war 2955 car. The rest of the post war versions eliminated those as well as the end warning placards.
You can easily convert any of the Post War tin single dome cars into any of the other versions by adding/subtracting corner steps, placards, trucks, paint color or decals.
