I just acquired a car with a pickup roller on a 481-10 base plate. However, the spring seems to be too strong as the pickup roller lifts one axle just enough off of the track that it doesn't make contact with the rails. The car tracks just fine until it finds an O-22 switch, where the jostling of the roller over all the switch excitement causes the roller to lift that one axle even further to the point of derailment. I wish I had a Lionel press and tools and rivets and the repair would be obvious. Since I don't have those tools, is there any chance of repair short of replacing the whole truck?

I wonder whether your truck has a slight twist to it.
It's hard to imagine the spring being strong enough to lift the car.

Regardless, I have replaced bad springs by pulling the old one off (grasp the spring wire in one spot and pull) and twisting a new one around the rivet unit it snaps in place. The spring is actually open on both ends, and has enough give.
Another option would be to replace the baseplate assembly.

Another option would be to snip one turn off the spring, and pull the cut piece off, as described above.

I have the riveting stuff, as well as spare rivets and springs, etc. It's easier to replace the spring as I described above.
