Any idea what would cause a new Lionel 6-82768 C&O Allegheny #1604 with less than three hours of run-time to slow, resume speed, then start lunging down the track. By the time it reached me at the other end of the layout, it would not move even at speed step "64".  The traction tires are all in place.  The remote brake was not on.  I had been pulling twenty 40' boxcars and tank cars that had been lightly oiled when I put them on the track.  I can easily move the string of cars by hand.  There were no noises or indications that something was going wrong with the engine.

I am concerned because I purchased the another 6-82767 Allegheny #1601 that I have not opened yet.

Any idea what would cause a sudden failure of this engine?  All sound and smoke features work.  My older C&O Allegheny #1601 in the Henry Ford Museum paint runs fine. Other engines on the layout run perfectly.

Dean at Lionel Service has been very helpful repairing all the new Lionel engines I purchased in the last year. They just sent five items back to me on Friday.

  1. To be honest if Lionel would take mine back for full refund I be thrilled . I am not happy with mine it doesn't run like i thought it would . I know the whistle  is right I don't like it .i just don't like the engine. The new dark drivers with the white walls clashes badly. I see myself selling mine in the future for sure.  I love the y6b way more then this engine.  I wish I wish I new someone that had a 2-10-10-2 that would  make a trade plus cash for there's.

Really? I am surprised to hear that.  How does it run differently than you expected? You are the first person that I have heard from that has had buyers remorse.

I do like the JLC and the 1st release whistle better even though they are wrong.

Well so the lesson of BTO goes on... I would say the winners this round are the people who purchased the GS4, and the UP FEF 844. And to be honest there is still no rush to buy them for me....I have the older releases which run great...

After I gave mine a good lube it ran smoother but it's not as smooth as my other legacy engines . Maybe it needs to break in.

With the incorrect whistle and the cab roof hatch backwards????

Yes, the lesser of the evils it looks like...

"However, Lionel left those of us who bought the FEF #838 out in the cold-not as advertised in the catalog."

Yes, a true miss - that is why I specified cab number 844... sorry to hear about that.

Lionel just issued me an RA for my new 6-82768 C&O Allegheny #1604. They apparently have seen this problem before.  Now I have to check my Southern Pacific Lines GS-4 that returned for a tender marker that was out and trim on the cow catcher that was loose.

My Union Pacific FEF-3 #884 (Black) returned for the second time for a front number shield that fell off a second time and a dim front marker light on the boiler front that had been previously replaced.  Both engines arrived back to me last Friday along with two sound boxcars that I just received a second RA to send them back again today.  The couplers are opening up when pulling 15 cars.

Am I having fun with model railroading, or what?

The good news is the Lionel staff will get to know you by a first name basis... If I have an issue with my new loco, I will have to send it in with your name on it!

At least they were reasonably priced....and you were able to see them in person before you ordered them.

Oh, wait a second............

You bought two! You lucky dog. Well, based on the track record of this release, maybe not..., I would get the other one on the track and test it out. Meanwhile, get an RA number and pack this one up for repair.  Lionel will make it right.

Agreed. My Allegheny arrived stuck in forward only conventional, broken smoke switch under the cab, and a twisted connecting rod.   Get that other one out of the box and test it/inspect it!
