You serious.? That sucks ....
Nicholas Smith called me like 2 months ago to tell me the set was cancelled.
My Hobby Shop said moved to December, but, was not really sure. Thanks for your thoughts. I will be a little unhappy, but, the New Lionel Catalog just came out today and Lots of Goodies to think about. The Possibilities.....
Interesting... But we haven't seen official word (yet). The latest Lionel shipping schedule dated 9/8 still has the set slated for Dec 2014, and Charlie Ro is still listing them for pre-order on their website at $1650.
Lots of dust still needs to settle regarding Lionel aluminum passenger cars. But if, in fact, the N&W passenger set has been cancelled, then it's anyone's guess what Lionel will do with the locomotives. They could either (1) scrap the 611J's, (2) use them for parts, or (3) blow them out ala carte w/o the passenger cars. Without whistle-steam in today's environment, nobody's gonna pay top dollar for them.
Definitely worth watching this space.
David
Put your orders in for the GGD 5-car set, a bit cheaper and being made:

I almost bought this set but without whistle smoke passed. I'm glad I did. With the super chuffer upgrade I'm happy with my J and not wondering when the passenger cars will be produced.
Lionel's shipping schedule still shows this set as shipping in December of 2014. Doesn't look cancelled to me, but who knows. I've heard those Aluminum cars are big deal to get made. I ordered one, so I hope they still make them.

Made me re-read this comment a few times about GGD being a bit cheaper. Not really 'cause the Lionel set includes a Legacy 611J locomotive! I doubt we'll ever see GGD offer a less expensive offering than Lionel.

In a Notch 6 interview around the LCCA meeting in Indianapolis, I seem to recall that Mike Reagan mentioned the set will come out in December. Of course, that was then...
The suggestion from Mike was that the passenger cars were all substandard, and that Lionel spent some time in China and the issue has now been resolved, with all of the streamlined cars that have been cataloged now back "on line" for delivery, albeit later than Lionel originally projected.
If I knew how to put in a link (and had the time while here at work), I would paste it her, but...
Hoping that the Pocahontas set does come out. I did not purchase the J as a separate engine because I wanted the set...
Bruce
Bruce,
I agree. There is no reason that this set would be cancelled, especially since new streamline cars are coming out.
The real question is; when will the station sound diners be re-released?
I dont know David, youve seen the prices in the new catalog. GGD could close the gap in price
David, did not know that. That's a shame then, but if they've already made the engines I doubt they'd have a problem selling them. Add the GGD cars and you have yourself a winner!

Not to mention that the GGD cars will be CORRECT for the N&W Powhatan Arrow, plus the windows will NOT be "stuck on the outside".
Bummerino!
So, I guess I'll just wait until the next J is offered with whistle steam!
I certainly take what Nawlins has forwarded (from Nicholas Smith) to heart (in a painful way), but I am hoping to get some final word directly from someone at Lionel regarding these items, specifically "The Pocahontas" train, because impending problems with the product suggesting cancellation was not what Mike Reagan implied in the July 23 Notch 6 broadcast.
Mike had said he was spending a lot of time and effort on the passenger cars and the issues surrounding it, and that he felt that the issues had been solved to state that the N&W passenger set should be available by Dec '14.
I realize that the broadcast was in July and it's now September, but...
Maybe the other aluminum passenger cars are also destined to be cancelled; if so, there goes my City of Miami. I think I hear my wife leafing through her catalogs now...
Hoping against hope,
Bruce

In what way did Mike consider the cars "sub-standard"?
What a BUMMER!! I've been looking forward to my 611 J W/the Pocahontas passenger cars. Made & laid new track especially for it on my layout for Christmas. What a let down. They'll probably reissue it at a 50% increase in the 2015 fall catalog and all of us who Preordered will just have to suck it up.

Gentlemen,
Allow me to set the record straight. This set has NOT been cancelled. Per the shipping schedule on Lionel.com the ship date of 12/15/2014 is still accurate. The locos are already in NC, the cars leave the orient on 10/30/14, arrive in NC on 12/1/14. We need a week to pack the locos, then ship, so the week of 12/15/14 is still 100% accurate for shipping.
Not sure where the document originated from, but it is NOT accurate! (I just might know a little something about this set!)

Lionel
Yeah!!!
Thanks Mike! I knew I had heard correctly on the Notch 6 broadcast (do I get extra blue and orange chips for that?).
In answer to Big Jim's comment, I don't know what the issues were with the passenger car production; I only know that Mike Reagan had said something to the effect that the cars had problems and that solutions had to be worked out.
Thanks very much for the update that you didn't have to provide, Mike. I really appreciate the information and am definitely looking forward to the set being on my layout!
Now I have to take all those catalogs away from the Mrs. (and replace them with Lionel 2014 V.2!)...
Regards,
Bruce
Very happy to hear the good news. Thanks Mike.
I called Lionel, Talked with Meagan in Customer Service, she said let me place you on hold for a few moments, and came back with Great News, It's not cancelled, Its a gonna happen in DECEMBER, MERRY CHRISTMAS......WOW. 9-11, Good News.....

Larry, look 4 posts above yours. Mike Reagan chimed in with THE official word. Doesn't get any more "official" than that.
David
Well, whaddya know?
Great news.
Mr. Reagan,
I sincerely thank you for settling this confusion. I ordered mine through a LHS in Roanoke 6 months ago and will wait patiently as long as it takes - I know it will be worth it in the end!
Also I called the number listed on that letter and spoke with a nice lady named Sherry in Lionel Products - she also concurred that the sets are being produced but the back ordered quantities have been canceled. That is what the letter states, but I think most of us misunderstood it.
Now can we get Lionel to make add on Coaches, Sleepers and a Diner? This is prototypical of the real train as it was an overnight run. How about an uncatalogued run for the set buyers only using existing in production cars? I would think the 6-81978 UP Sleeper/Coach could get repainted into N&W colors without too much trouble, and maybe make a 2nd add on pack with a Diner/Coach. That would make an 8 car train which was near prototypical length. Thanks!
Michael

I don't think the set was canceled, I saw that Eric Siegel received his.
