Hi, I am refurbishing another 726.  The very early one. One I didn't even know I had. Found it in a box of other locos from 20-25 years ago.  Also has a 2426w tender.

It has a removable stack, and it's gone.  Am I dreaming or have I seen some of these with an aluminum stack like some of the 2025/ 675 had? Even if not, anyone know if one from those loco's would fit? Would look cool when repainted and done. I suppose I could have my local machining shop make one.

Thanks, Matt

Matt, if your 726 is the 1946 model with the smoke bulb, you may be in for a bit of a search. I recently restored an early 746 that I had purchased at a train meet. The engine had been refitted with the heater type smoke unit and a later 726 shell. I was able to locate a correct shell (with no e-unit slot and the handrail stanchions) for it. I discovered that the smoke stack flange was longer and protruded about 1/8" or so inside of the shell, probably due to the unique smoke bulb arrangement. Unfortunately, I didn't have a suitable replacement handy and ended up trimming the flange to accommodate the later version smoke unit.

I think the stack from a 736 or maybe even a 2046 might fit your shell but may be short if you're planning to use the smoke bulb. Good luck with the refurb!

Yep, you are correct on the stack length. I did a search on the forum here, and there was a thread from last year on that exact subject.  Mine too has had the smoke unit update, so whatever stack I go with (not a smoke bulb stack) should be fine. Lengthwise, or depth I should say.  Wonder about diameter though? I think an aluminum type stack from a 2025 wold look cool after it's repainted. If it will fit.

I just finished a later 726 and it came pretty good.

Thanks,

Matt
