What does the bid history look like?
Is it two people duking it out (in which case it's probably fake), or are there many lemmings trying to jump off the cliff?

Shill bidders, or people just playing games. Likely the latter.
I saw scale legacy PE locos get bid over 10 grand last year. One of the sellers was a forum member. Bidders retracted and never paid.
There's a good chance this one will be relisted in a day or two once the seller realizes there will be no payout.
Since the formal announcement on Friday. These have been selling for around the $600 mark give or take.
Especially since there are others with a buy it now of 800 and supposedly new.
Shill bidding, the two interlocked right after it got $750, then the last probably real bidder dropped out.
And they just went all the way to $2600.
They didn't even do a good job of hiding it.

On a side note. The old Tmcc 12969 cab1 and base set is bidding up over $200.
I guess an old remote is better than no remote, or one with a really expensive base.

Yes, from a reliable seller, IMO.. 2 more sold for $800.. That's insane also!!
Yesterday, a 990 command set sold for $1,601. Makes me wonder if the sale for $2,600 may have been real.
As they say, there is a sucker born every minute if those prices are true. A 990 control system is just that, I can't see it becoming much of a collectors item any time soon. I realize that sometimes odd things, like certain record albums, become big ticket items but often it is because they are rarities *shrug*. Lots of consumer items get discontinued, few of them become collectible *shrug*.
I'm just so glad I grabbed a 993 off of Amazon $282 the week before the catalog announcement.
Theres one for over $500 with 6 days to go. I guess this is a good indication of how folks feel about the Legacy handheld.
If you think about it. If someone buys a $2400 VL locomotive, and wants a handheld that accesses ALL of the legacy features, what choice do they have?
Ironically, theres a DCS system currently at $202 with only two days left. T
I'm really suprised Lionel is dropping this piece of hardware. I always thought it was cool design and no doubt took an lot of talent and time to design and develope. A phone app just doesn't compare regardless of what some might say.
Just sent my one copy into Lionel today for repair. Very thankful they are still agreeing to support on the repair end.
Bidding $2600.00. They’re probably the same people that complain about Lionel pricing.
My son and I saw that auction as well. He told me I should get my brand new one out of the closet and sell it. I am currently using a used 990 in excellent condition, that I bought last July and paid $260.00 for. I also have a brand new 1.6 set I bought last January of 2021, for $364.84 + shipping. For a total $410.17, glad I bought a lot of my stuff before the prices got ridiculous.
Makes me appreciate conventional operation.

I'm amused at the prices this stuff is going at, I'm glad I have my stock of Legacy and DCS control systems. 
I got (2) brand new ones in the box I am going to sell to supplement my retirement in a few months!

Back on day one, or more precisely not long afterward, I got my 990 set for free.

Buy a JLC Big Boy, get a free 990 Command Set, to celebrate the launch of Legacy, and encourage people to get both.
I still have them, and they still work just fine (knock on wood of course).
Taking advantage of that special offer made me appreciate Legacy command control, rather than conventional operation, after being focused almost solely on conventional for 45 years before that.

I still, occasionally, use my CAB1/CAB2 setup. Over the years I’ve bought components for this generation so that I have backup pieces should something fail. When the Legacy system came out, it was over kill for the size layout I run.

Did you try "HOBBY HAVEN" in Des Moines , Iowa? They had one (990) sitting on the shelf the last time I was in there!!!

I'm wondering, why are some folks so bent on getting the old command base now that they're willing to pay these insane prices? After all, it's the remote that's being discontinued forever. On the other hand, a more capable command base (the Base3) will be coming out. Why not pick up just the Cab2 (the expansion set) now and then wait for the Base3?
Why do people continue to buy the old TMCC BASE1/CAB1 when they're available. Some are resistant to change. As for me, I'm not jumping right into the BASE3. If I do buy it in the future, it'll be when the bugs are worked out and there's a significant reason to prefer it over the Legacy command system.

If you want a"remote" that will actually access full Legacy features, the Cab 2 is your only option.
On the other hand, a more capable command base (the Base3) will be coming out.
The base 3 does not come with a remote. You can buy a cab1L remote. It will not access the legacy features and it will cost you $600 for the two, just to get basic command features.
For the operator who prefers a handheld over a device touchscreen, the cab 3 is only as capable as the remote being used

While the prices are indeed insane, for the person who spends over $2000 for one locomotive to pull one train. A handheld that can run several of those trains and access all of the bells and whistles for $1000, doesn't seem like a horrible idea.
As I've stated before. The Legacy Cab2 is the ONLY remote in any model train scale where the operator can use the "meat and potatoes" of train functions without ever looking at it because of the tactile feel of the buttons.
For those folks who prefer touch screen operation, the base 3 will be great. I'm already on my phone too much, and I prefer to look at my trains when I run them.

The seller put it back up a few days ago. Its currently at $875

Its doesn't hurt to leave some "change" in your wallet either.
Lionels marketing is all about the "latest and greatest, gotta have it".
I get it, thats just how it works, for the folks with no spending limits. More power to ya.

A quick web search will reveal that they are a drop ship outfit. Meaning they don't carry any stock. They rely on distributors to ship the product to you. They will charge your credit card before shipping the item to you. If the warehouses don't have the product, you then have to go back and forth with them to get a refund. You could take a chance, just don't let it go beyond the time that you can dispute the sale with you credit card.

Results of a Google Search on is active powersports legit. That should tell you all you need to know about them. FWIW, years ago I tried to order an "Unobtainium" product from them, never did get it, finally went to the credit card company and yanked my money back.
