Never used a Legacy 990 and have one coming in the mail,  want to know what is the best way to set it up and if there are any other tips besides reading the manual.

Sorry if this has been talked about.

I heard there is some special mode or feature with the Acela, any truth?

Thank you,

Robert

I am not sure about version 1.60 of the Legacy software (because I have not tried running my Acela under it) but with previous versions there was indeed a special setting for the Acela when accessing the “Info” and engine/car type options on entering the engine in the CAB-2 remote. It is mentioned in the last edition of the Legacy manual I looked at.

The manual is pretty dense but there is really no substitute for reading it before you use the system for the first time. Aside from the fact that it’s a little sensitive to track that is not firmly connected up and ensuring that the base station is connected to a properly grounded electrical socket, I have not had any issue except the dreaded “ground plane” you can look up on the forum. In my case it occurred only after we had some re-wiring done for new lighting.

There are some ACELA operating tips s here - the last link listed in blue. I would assume that would it be configured using TMCC mode in the settings. Perhaps some other Acela users will confirm.

I've always liked those operating tips and especially the last one:

"Bistro car #3310- This car has really dim lighting. This is a bar, bars are dark."

If you find the Acela setting in the CAB-2 it will automatically configure the set to the right mode. It is pre-Legacy so TMCC is the control system but I always regarded the built-in settings as the functional equivalent of an orange module.

One item that was not mentioned in the manual (I think), is that if you break a curve with a section of straight or have an "S" curve, the minimal straight section needed to be at least the length of the car (21") so that the tilting mechanism had a chance to reset.  I had numerous derailments until I got that tip.  When it worked it was the best train I ever purchased.  Unfortunately after more than 6 trips back to Lionel (car (s) 4 times and engines to numerous to mention it went back to Lionel for good and was used as a source for spare parts.  If they ever come out with a new release, I would purchase it even with all the issues my lemon had.

Other than Acela nuances, there should not be any differences using a Legacy base and remote.

just this?

• Programming Acela o Slide Program/Run switch into Program o Press:  Eng  +  ## + Set + Aux 1 + 7 + 6

• If you are running the Acela and one of the cars starts flashing.   o Stop the engine  o Do a soft reset by pressing: Aux 1 + 0

• When changing directions, wait until both pantograph commands are initiated before trying to open the doors with the remote.  One pantograph with rise, then the other will go down.  Once the second pantograph starts going down, then you can command the doors to open.    • If car door opens when the train is first powered up, it is not receiving the IR signal.  Turn the power off and re-check the tether/coupler alignment between all the cars in the set.

• Bistro car #3310- This car has really dim lighting.  This is a bar, bars are dark.
