I am the original owner of a lionel 4 4 2 that's never worked quite right for me.  The engine is listed as being command equipped on the box but I have only ever run it in conventional mode.  The problem is that no matter the voltage applied to the track, it always goes the same speed. It doesn't matter if I apply 6 volts or 17 volts the only thing that happens if a very brief burst of speed when the voltage is increased, followed by setting into the exact same speed.  It doesn't seem to matter if it is in run or program.

Any ideas on how I actually gain control of this engine in conventional mode?  Please note I do not have a lionel command system.

John, your top speed somehow got set to what it is.  Follow what is posted below and you should unlock it and regain control.  Do this with the Odyssey switch on.

1. While the locomotive is in neutral, turn your controller up to the maximum power (no
more than 19 volts), wait one second, then press and hold the horn button.
2. While holding the HORN button, slowly reduce the track voltage to approximately one-third
or one-half of the full power.
3. Release the HORN button.
4. Move the locomotive  in forward OR reverse. The locomotive  is now out of speed
control mode.

Follow the same steps as described above even if there is no Odyssey switch. In locos without a switch, you can turn Odyssey on and off using your transformer.

You are aware of what Odyssey is and how it works, right?

No, I am not all familiar with that system.  This is my only lionel engine that isn't purely conventional.

Okay,  first of all thank you all as I now have speed control again! Now I have a different problem.  The engine takes off at very low voltage, which is no big deal, but now the whistle button causes the e unit to cycle into neutral when traveling forward. I am using an mth z 750 transformer.

Any thoughts on how to keep this from happening at low voltage in conventional mode?
