My opinion but that big over the top announcement seemed like PR hype overkill to announce a brass engine on a diecast frame. Personally, it's not for me.

I'm not interested in this particular offering, but the program offers me hope for seeing engines that otherwise wouldn't get made (like this one).  If that continues, this program *is* for me.

I agree. This engine seems like a nice engine, if it falls under your tastes. Personally, I think the price isn't all that bad, considering it is a Lionel special run item (if that sounded like throwing mud, it wasn't, trust me). Maybe down the road I'll stick my toes into the water if Lionel does some more releases.

"I really don't appreciate scale trains"

This has never been fathomable to me. I have heard it before, of course. Don't care; just... if one doesn't like the real ones (as scaled), why would one like the un-real ones...?

=================

The hybrid (been going on for years in HO; theirs are often plastic/die-cast, also) ATSF Mike is the first new Lionel (or MTH) locomotive to interest me in a long, long time. I don't buy "new electronic releases", and I don't do much diesel. I am actually considering it. I like the ATSF a lot.

3rd Rail's NYC Mercury streamlined K-5 Pacific from 10+ years ago was a hybrid. I have one. But it was "upside-down": the shell was die-cast and the frame/running gear was brass.

Oh - and it's not "brew-ha-ha"; it's French, and it's brouhaha. "Brew-ha-ha" would be something after way too much beer consumption.

It's really quite simple:  I am a Toy Train enthusiast.  I like O-31 curves and switches, over-sized couplers, cast-in details, 12' tall gatemen, Plasticville buildings, and operating accessories.  This announcement is great.  Just not for me.

Agree totally!

You two are rare breads. but with that said give me scale and drop the toy in my trains.

They are not rare breeds.  Lionel sells a lot more traditional trains than they do scale.  That is the reason Lionchief plus is so popular.

I don't know the ratio of traditional to scale Lionel sells. It would be very interesting to know. While much of their catalog has been taken up by scale stuff in recent years, it does seem that the Lionchief line has been very popular. And Menard's train offerings seem to be getting a lot of attention, too.

I think for many of us, it's a matter of space. Particularly in parts of the country where there aren't basements, there often simply isn't any place to put a giant layout required for scale-sized operation. Cost is obviously a factor as well.

I really wish Lionel would continue the LionMaster series, increase the level of detail, and offer more engines. How about a LionMaster J, for example? Hopefully, we'll soon see a line of 15" plastic passenger cars, and maybe more offerings of F-3s with Legacy and added details that were found in the Neil Young series.
