I am working on a Lionel postwar engine, with the 681-100 motor. I am wondering on which terminals/lugs to put power on, to bypass the E-unit, which I think is bad. My thoughts are to put positive, on the center lug and on one of the brush lugs to make the motor go. Is my thinking correct? I know the motor has to have a common.

No, that is not correct. What you need to do to make it work is to is to put the wire from the pickup roller on one of the brush lugs. The center lug and the other brush should be jumpered together. The motor is already connected to the chassis because one end of the field winding is connected to the motor frame so that will connect to the  outside rail through the chassis and the wheels. If you're going to try this without putting the engine on the track, you need to connect one transformer lead to the frame of the motor and the other lead to one of the brushes while the othe brush is connected to the center lug. If it doesn't go in the right direction swap the wires on the brush lugs.

I hope I have made this clear enough. Good luck!
