I was wondering, how do you go about finding information on a Lionel engine that is too old to be listed on the manufacture's website? It would help though if there was a website the has all the info you would need. When I see a listing for a engine that doesn't have any kind of real description, I just move on.

An internet search of the product number should turn up a description of the product. A search of retailer's websites should also turn up a description of the item, many times with a reference to the catalog(s) that the item may be viewed in. Lionel's website allows you to view catalogs online back to 2010.

Sometimes I have luck by just doing a Google search using the name Lionel - product # and engine type.

If you want to know about a certain engine number then ask about that number then maybe somebody here will have all the info you need.
Try these:

"Greenberg Guide" books for Lionel are good sources of info, also the "Standard Catalog of Lionel Trains" books by Doyle.
I agree with lionel parts. You are already at the right place.
