On eBay there are die cast Lone Ranger General loco sets #6-38673 ( loco and tender only). The loco looks to be black not blue. The end flaps of the box say it is die cast. The box says it is a Lionel Lone Ranger Set Wild West. On Lionel's web site is says item not found. How can I find out more about this item? Given some problems with the plastic general body, I would prefer metal, of course. Thanks in advance.

That is correct. Plastic bodies only.
There was a black die cast General in the LCCA store at the Dallas convention. It had a can motor the same as all of the others. I believe that it was selling for around $100.00 (but I could be wrong). Perhaps someone can supply more details. It was NOT part of the Lone Ranger set.
By way of update, Grzyboski's has that item number on sale as part of the Lone Ranger set break up. They show a blue plastic general but I would swear the eBay item is black. Could the end flaps on the box just be a typo?
The one on Ebay looks dark blue to me. It is somewhat underexposed.

All of the Lionel Generals from the Post War 1862/72 on up to the current Lone Ranger and LCCA "Great Locomotive Chase" Generals are plastic bodied w/metal and die-cast parts.

As everyone on here has said, despite what the box says, the Lionel General is plastic. And it does look black. Why not send a message to the seller to post a better photo- like out of the plastic?

This is getting to be very mysterious. Every one that I can find for sale on the Internet describes this loco as being die cast metal. The photos look like the body is plastic. I hope somebody that has one can clear this up.

It's the same model that they've made for years. I have one that is not the Lone Ranger model, but it's still made the same. And it is plastic except for a few metal parts.

Thanks to all who replied. I was going to get a metal Lionel general but there is no such thing. Grzyboski has the new Rio Grande set with the plow on the front for $215 plus shipping. That is an entire set.
