Lionel Genset flywheel issue (2313100)

With your correction it sounds as if you have pinpointed your problem.  I see there are no parts breakdowns for the new Genset yet.  If not too late, please share some pics of your repair going after the loose gear.  I'm suspect yours may not be the only one with this problem and more might be coming.   

There’s not much to show. The gear slid right off the motor shaft.  I put some JB weld on it and put it back together. I called Lionel and they won’t send me a motor, they want to pay to ship the engine both ways.  If it doesn’t hold I’ll send it back to Lionel and they can replace the motor.

Well, my fix didn’t last very long so I’ll box it up and ship it to Lionel.

There are special kinds of "green loctite" retaining compounds that are for round parts on shafts.

I haven't used them on such small motor shafts so these may or may not work, but if you try it make sure it doesn't get into the motor bearing or you may lock the motor shaft.

I got the gear attached, but the engine is not running right.  I’m using Legacy and I barely turn the dial and the engine takes off, goes about 3 feet, stops, and the cab light blinks. I tried to do a reset several times but it does the same thing.  Anything else I can try?

Jim, sound like your tach pickup is not working.  Make sure that the plastic flywheel is riding where the pickup on the board can see the wheel "windows" go by.  Please post some pics of your motor and flywheel.  Your model does not have a parts listing so we are all kind of "flying blind" trying to help you.   

That was my thought also but it looks ok to me unless it’s no longer working. The engine ran fine for a few days.

You thought initially it was a loose flywheel.  Did you remove the flywheel?  We’re you able to tighten the setscrew fully?  Your flywheel looks just a bit high to me.  Can you lower it 1/16”?  Motor end play may allow that to raise up slightly under load.  

I came to the same conclusion.  I couldn’t remove the flywheel but I did try.  I must have raised it a hair.  I lowered it a hair and it’s working now.  Not much room for error. Thanks for your help.
