Lionel GG-1 8753 (MPC era) parts

What about fashioning a shim from brass tubing to tight fit over the axle and in the gear?  Likely there are variations in axles and gears throughout Lionel evolution.

Here's a photo of the GG-1 parts diagram from my Greenberg's Modern Era repair manual(mpc).

Has your gear listed as the same number, you may have gotten the wrong gear that got mixed in the wrong bin. Also looks like there are different axles?

As Franktrain wrote, you probably received the wrong gear. It happens. Not all that long ago I ordered a dozen gears from one of the major Lionel parts suppliers, I received two different parts, and had to figure out what they actually were.

Franktrain -- thanks for checking the later version of Greenberg's for me.  The axle is the correct one that has the swedges on it.  The chewed up gear fits tightly over the axle and engages the swedges so that the gear actually turns the axle.  The new gear is just slightly loose over the swedges, so there's no engagement, and the gear won't turn the axle.

The new gear came from my local hobby shop, so I'll head back there with the swedged axle and hopefully find one that fits tightly like it's supposed to.

I went back to my LHS yesterday, and indeed it was that a couple of similar gears got mixed up in the same bin.  I swapped out for the correct part #622-181.  GG-1 is back together again and working fine!
