My original Lionel PRR J-1 tender sound electronics failed. Wrote about this some months ago; the task has worked itself back into the queue.

I think the easiest solution is to buy replacement sound boards. Here's, maybe, the problem. Lionel does not show the original electronics in their parts list. Lionel does show the Legacy boards. My question is: are the new boards compatible with whatever signal info that passes through the IR tether?

Yes, I could call Lionel and ask. I figure the collective wisdom of the Forum (GGG, GRJ, et al) might be more reliable than the info I might get from Lionel.

There are a bunch of things that could cause your tender's sound to not function. Have you tried getting it to work in both TMCC and conventional modes?

There are four boards in the original 6-28078 PRR J1 2-10-4: RailSounds power supply, audio board, AD20 and motherboard. Other causes could be the volume control pot and speaker(s). Since the J tender has two speakers in parallel, you can probably eliminate those as a cause.

The easiest thing would be to substitute boards known to be working properly. I'd start with the RailSounds power supply and the audio boards. Also, rotate the volume pot a few times back and forth over its range.

The original TMCC electronics are, in fact, available. I have extra RailSounds power supply boards, if that happens to be the culprit.
