Question is how hard is it for a novice to replace, or am I better off having a professional handle it. My local shop will be a two to three month turn around and I won't be shipping it anywhere else. Anyone have schematics or advice?

That should be a trivial repair, you just have to make sure you don't lose any spacers when you take the rod bolt out. On some locomotives, you end up taking a lot more than that off just to replace traction tires.

No, if you're replacing that piece, it's just taking the old one off and fitting the new one. Obviously, you have to assemble all the parts properly, but you have a perfect reference on the other side of the locomotive.
