Just noticing that the led lights (assume they are led) that illuminate the lionel logo on each side of the base are no longer lit.  The base is around 10 years old, and since new it has been not turned off, so I did get my monies worth regarding the lifespan of the leds.  But it makes me wonder if I should have been turning the base off when not in use, am I shortening the lifespan of any other component specific to the base doing its job.  I would hate to lose all the data stored in the base, how do others store their base when not in use.

thanks

Frank

My base is only on when I run trains.  Otherwise its off/unplugged from the outlet.

I also turned off the charging feature via the switch the day I took it out of the box, and charge the batteries in an external charger.

My operating sessions are probably only and hour or two every couple of weeks at most. I have never lost any data in the base. There are even still I.D.#s stored for engines I sold off several years ago and neglected to delete.

My base has been off far more than its ever been on. When life gets in the way it could be off weeks or months at a time.

The common sense answer would be. The more an electronic device is powered up, the closer its getting to its end of service. However, some electronics can last forever, and others may fail prematurely.

Maybe our resident "electronics experts" will chime in with a more scientific/definitive answer.
