when I bought my legacy systeam I took it up to my train club because I had no idea how to use it because I had never used anything other than MTH dcs. The guys at the club told me to turn off the charging element in my base because they say it will over heat and bad things will happen. I want to know if this is true and if it is true is there a way to fx it.

Only the remote will get hot if left in an on charger.  In my old release of the 990, if you leave the remote in an on charger, the remote will get hot while charging and stay that way.  Had to send that remote back to Lionel twice for repair (took a month); always thought it was due to letting it get too hot.

In my newer release of the 990 (DOM 04/13/2015), there was a noticeable change in the charging cycle to go to green flashing lights when charged, then solid green when the remote is fully charged and it does not get as hot.  In both units, I do not leave the remote in the charger after it is fully charged.

I had mine overheat, sent it back to Lionel, came back still overheating, to avoid the whole mess, I don’t use the charger base, I leave the switch off, and I keep a wall charger with two sets of batteries on the ready..... works like a champ, no worries anymore....one of the forum members suggested that to me, been doing that for long while now.....easy fix.........Pat
