Does anyone have these engines?

We traded for this AA pair last week and I had a chance to operate them on the club's Christmas display yesterday. I'm somewhat disappointed in them (as was the previous owner) because the sound is not what I expected from all I read about Legacy. This is our first diesel although I'm very pleased with our Legacy steamers. The horn is 'raspy' and unusual in its sound. Smoke output is weak and how Lionel can sell dummy units with NO electrical components for this kind of money is beyond me. I would have thought Legacy diesels would have smoke and lighting in the non-powered units as well!

Have heard some comments that Lionel seems to be 'cheapening' the Legacy engines in several ways. Any truth to this?

Smoke is on full and you can barely see it in person.

Most often when these geeps smoke poorly it is due to not enough fluid or the fluid getting trapped at the base of the output funnel. Lionels latest legacy locos have "jumbo sized" resistors making them thirsty and requiring regular addition of fluid.

I always add a minimum 10-15 drops and gently blow down the either stack with a finger over the opposite stack the night before.

Your vague on the sound, If the knob is turned up all the way there are also two different levels controlled via the remote be it a TMCC remote or Legacy remote.

Outside of the horn if the overall sound is poor its likely both of the levels are not up all the way. Smoke and lights on unpowered units is only offered in ABA sets, this has been true in previous TMCC diesel offerings as well.

Forum member  MartyE did a great"how to" on thses geep smoke units.

Seems odd you would trade for locos someone else was unhappy with

I have PRR 8512 as well, and after a lot of searching found PRR 8510 too.  I suppose these were made in different years, I haven't checked, but the sound sets are different between the two, which is really good for when running them together.

I like the sounds on each.  The horns are quite different from each other, but I like both.  But I have had others mention that they don't care for the sound of the horn on one of them.  But subjective opinions aside on the sounds, they are very strong, so it does sound like you have something wrong with yours.

They are reasonably ok runners these two, a bit quirky here and there, not perfect, but I like them fine enough.
