I bought a 6-38430 Polar Railroad Legacy GP-7 Diesel at my LHS a couple years ago at a summer tent sale. It sat unopened until this year when I took it out to run on my township's holiday layout (https://thegrangeestate.org/trains-at-the-grange/). When I got it fired up, everything ran fine, but there was no sound. I toggled all the switches, but no luck. Perusing the forums here, the general consensus is to check and reseat all the boards/chips to rule out something coming loose in shipping, but I am unable to remove the shell in order to do so. I've got all the screws out, and disconnected the lighting wires from the front and rear, but it seems to still be getting hung up where the engineer figurines are. I've scoured the internet for an actual service manual (not an owner's manual), or some other instructions on how to remove the shell to no avail.

Has anyone ever successfully got under the hood of one of these, and if so, how did you do it?

Yes, the volume is turned all the way up. And the shell is definitely hanging on the engineer figures. There's a little pin in front of each of their heads that falls into their lap areas when the shell is lifted, and they are what's preventing the cover from going any higher. Not sure if they need to be removed in some way. I'll try to add some photos later tonight.

I remember mine being a combination of sliding it forward and tilting to one side (I think the right side) after getting it somewhat lifted in the back. One of my cab lights was broken from the get go; probably from putting the shell on at the factory which, as you will find, is even more difficult/frustrating than getting the shell off. Good luck and be patient.
