The information indicates minimum radius of 054; BUT I have mostly 060- 072 but some 048 on the layout.   I have NO 048 turnouts, and my 048 is under a mountain and so is not visible.

I am interested in buying an M1A, Legacy by Lionel, OR the largest Legacy that will run on 048.

I know that manufacturers are conservative about these ratings- and also sometimes it is because of the appearance (vs. the running of the loco).   Anyone have experience with an M1A, running on 048??

Or a recommendation about the largest Legacy Pennsy steamer that WILL run on 048??

Mike:

Good luck finding a Legacy M1A. They were offered by Lionel in 2014. Probably my favorite engine. The whistle is the coolest of any of my steamers. There were three road numbers offered, but one came with a set. I liked my M1A so much, I decided to buy another road number, but soon discovered that they are almost impossible to find. There is a seller on eBay who has one of the two I am interested it, but is asking an absurd $2,000 for it. The one I bought from CharlesRo in 2014 cost half of that price. Hopefully, Lionel will offer the M1A again soon.

BTW, the catalog says the M1A needs a minimum curve of 031, so you should be OK.

(Watch that seller, he's a well known" O guage flipper", you can see his reviews aren't the greatest.)

I do own one of the Legacy M1b's offered years ago. I keep it on my o-60 loop but it will do o-48 though it doesn't look pretty.

The caveat however is. Lionel tightened the engine and tender gap on the newer Legacy M1a. I can't say for sure that it will do o-48. Looking at my M1b, if the drawbar were much shorter the tender and cab decks might hit.

Maybe someone has the Legacy M1a and the maens to try it on o-48.

Here are some photos of my Legacy M1b  on y o-48 inner loop for reference. Keep in mind it has a larger engine/tender gap:
