I just got a lionel UP H7 2-8-8-2 UP steamer and it is a fabulous engine. The box does not say pittman motor anymore but still just creaps along super slow on speed step 1. It takes about 1 second for the center axle to go from one gargraves tie to the next and at super smooth running. so slow it is not enough bang to couple to next car. if anyone has taken these apart what motor is lionel using nw. I always liked the pittmans as they are super torque monsters. At the current prices for articulateds pittmans (support American made) should be still in them. My Joshua lionel cowen challenger with cruise commander m and a pittman runs 2 seconds from gargraves tie to tie. It has a pittman.

6 dash number please!
I've had two Lionel Legacy steam engines with Canon motors that shorted. One took out the RCMC, really ran up the repair bill! I've never had a bad Pittman, though I did see one that needed brushes. The nice thing is you can actually repair a Pittman.
Pittmans have just shot through the roof, which is why I think manufactures have moved away from them. Check even auctions sites. Untested used motors costing more than a used engine. Once they were bought out by a larger corporation, things changed. G
Could be, but I'm not impressed with the replacements.
