I can not get my Legacy 7611 SD-40 to go into reverse. I have tried the "reset" as described in the operating manual. Turn off track power and legacy power...set to program, turn on legacy base, power up track, press eng and enter Id# 11, press set, turn off track power, wait 10 seconds, slide switch to run position, turn track power back on. Any ideas?

I had this problem with an engine at our club. Check out this thread:
I updated the thread posted above. If the loco moves a bit and stops, the encoder is suspect. If no motion at all, then the RCMC has probably failed.
The engine runs fine in forward, stops , starts, speed control properly, lights, horn, bell all work...just can't get it to reverse direction. I have tried the reset...no avail.
Are you using a Cab2? Try a different kind push on the boost wheel to signal reverse. I have a new engine (Alaska SD70mac) that's kind of picky with the direction push. I just figured the wheel is going bad. Then, I get the different numbered mate to it and it's not finicky.
It hasn't failed yet, but I suspect something in the engine. Try it close to base.
Can I control a Legacy engine with a TMCC remote??
yes, you can. You won't have all of the features, but you could test direction control.
Did you try operating it conventionally for direction or do you just have bricks?
No I have a regular transformer so I will try that also. Thanks.
Ok,
I have finally had time to sit down and try some things. I put my Legacy 7611 SD-40 on my test track and powered it up with my Lionel CW-80 transformer which will mean only conventional mode. I made sure that the Legacy base and my TMCC base are all off. The engine will run in forward and reverse using normal commands of the transformer. Direction change requires 2 pushes on the direction button on the transformer.
I put 7611 back on my regular track and decided to try the use of one of my TMCC remotes and sure enough I can control forward and backward in the normal manner using the direction button. The issue may be with the cab remote. Let you know. Is it possible for one button to go bad? The other two actions of the direction button on the Legacy remote work correctly but not "direction". I noticed on page 10 of the Legacy v1.3 manual that you can click down and hold and rock to "absolute" control of direction and this seems to work some. Obviously this button is not working correctly like it has for a while but I can get some reverse of direction if I press down, hold and rock the button and the lights will change and direction changes. Hope this helps someone else.
It might be weak batteries in the Cab2.
Try this if you haven't already. Under the CTC menu turn ON the Velocity Throttle Direction Control. Now with the locomotive on the track, flick the Velocity Throttle counter clockwise while the engine is stopped. You should see the lighting change directions and an air brake sound. See if you can operate the engine in reverse. If so the rocker/direction control button is defective.
Any new information?
I followed the instructions and sure enough it works. Now with the Throttle Velocity engaged, the direction button seems to be working correctly. Again thanks to all for the great help in resolving this issue. I really appreciate all the folks on this forum for all the help they provide.

Can't say why that fixed the direction button but glad it's working for you.
