Lionel Legacy Steam/Diesel Lashup

I run diesel/steam legacy lash ups all the time. Be sure odyssey is either on or off (on is better) on both locomotives. They should be coupled together and they should run just fine together as long as you build a train and run with the train number. Do not address the two locomotives with their separate ENG numbers. 

Speeds do not have to be exactly matched to MU multiple locomotives. The faster loco will just pull a little harder on the train, that's all. As long as it is not slipping its wheels, you're good to go.

sorry saw your email. Yes you should be able to run these together fine unless there is an issue. The drive is forgiving in MU on Legacy engines. Give it a shot. I do it all the time with steam and diesels. 

 

Ok, just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something incorrectly. I do remember the days of the early odyssey and I ended up trashing some diesel power trucks from engines fighting each other during MU consists. 

I just recently got back into the Lionel end of it after being a die hard MTH person. I must say I'm very impressed by what I'm seeing in the Lionel product.

I've done an MU with a couple of diesels and a couple of steamers, just to see if it could be done.  There is no reason to turn off the Odyssey II IMO, they matched up very well.

To expand on what Marty said. Legacy locos are all equipped with back-driveable gears which allows the slower locomotive to coast.

 

The back drivable gears are evident because a legacy loco ( with a bit of pressure) can be pushed by hand with the power off and the drive wheels will turn relatively easy.

 

On TMCC locos the gears essentially "lock" the axles when the motor is not turning.
