I've tried searching first, so forgive me if I can't find any info. Wasn't there some kind of motor or bearing problem with the LTI era Rock Island and DL&W Northern from the 90's? I recall reading some vague info about a problem. I recently bought a Lionel Southern Mikado that looks like it shares the same chassis as the postwar Berkshire and LTI Northern. I'm happy with the way this runs, but is there something with these chassis that I should look into? Gears strip easily or the motor burns out or something?

The problem with the Northerns (mostly the Rock Island from 1987 and Lackawanna from 1988) was that their armatures easily burnt out, and had to be replaced, which was rather tricky. I forgot which magazine had an article to fix it, but Lionel hasn't really repeated the semi-scale unstreamlined Northern since the Northern Pacific model of 1992, which is a shame.

All of the Berkshire models (including the offshoot Mikado like yours) were pretty much trouble free.
