Lionel Mallet - main drive motor stalled

There could be something wrong electrical that is causing the motor to act funny. Unfortunately though if you take the shell off the locomotive you will void the warranty on it so I think it is best to just exchange it.

Good thing you brought something like this up because no one has said anything bad about these new Legacy mallets although motors stalling can occur in any locomotive.

The new Legacy engines have a chip that monitors the voltage and amp draw. If it is exceed it shuts that feature down.

You probably have either a bum motor, or a binding mechanism. Coulc be in the drive train or in the drivers and side rods.

I would return it for another if you can. Otherwise if one is not available return it for repair.

I on the other hand would have already voided the warranty... its just my nature to fix things...

Another possible cause is the flywheel may be slipping on the motor shaft.

My Vision line Hudson did the same thing after about 2 minutes of running.  For no apparent reason it stated working again, then stalled and then totally dead. Wound up sending back to Lionel for repair.

My vl hudson had that issiue to. They replaced one of the boards.    

My new PARR T-1 had a similar issue, the front motor mounts were loose.
