You already have the tooling, in the main. You have offered the L2a Mohawk (I have it), and this is an L2d with a sunken Elesco FWH. There are no doubt other detail differences, and I have not sat down and inspected both the L2a and L2d engines and tenders, but this has to be a promising place to start, relative to the tooling. Only the boiler detailing should need any changes, I would think.

But, besides being a tasty Mohawk, and who doesn't need more of those?, the main reason I have picked this loco to request, is that, unlike all the Hudsons and all the Niagaras and all the big NYC Pacifics and Mikados, this thing actually still exists!

(We'll discuss the real L3a 3001 in Indiana at a later date, speaking of tooling you already have that needs change.)

"Scott is looking for reservations on this one now."

Yeah, I know. But, I have been waiting 2-3 years on my NYC R-class electric from 3rd, and have inquired about it a couple of times (all I get is "maybe"...), and it remains on the "coming" list (when last I looked 2 months ago), and I have just lost patience with them. They keep announcing new items. What about the rest of us?

So, until and if my R-class comes, I will not be reserving anything else from 3rd Rail. Mohawk or not. Also, I suggested to 3rd that a DRGW L-105 Challenger (not the UP design) be offered, and it now is (I'm not taking credit). So, I'll save money there, too. I suppose that I should officially cancel my R-class order, as this is a 2-way street, and if you can't make it (essentially a cancellation on their end), don't ask me to allocate resources to it.

Really, I'd rather have a Lionel Mohawk than a 3rd Rail version, anyway. My L2a is beautiful and sturdy. I think I'll do a close detail comparison between the L2a and the L2c to see if an existing L2a could be accurately (90%) and reasonably changed to an L2c, without butchery. Great, another project...

I would be surprised if Lionel did another L2 given they have done three aleady. I have to give them credit for finally doing a USRA Mikado with road specific details instead of redoing the K-Line engine over and over with just new electronics.  So there is hope they might alter the details on their Mohawk.

I have an R motor reserved as well. If it happens OK, if not thats OK too.

I like the idea of another NYC freight hauler. I own 3 versions of the L2a and 4 Berkshires. It would be nice if Lionel would tweak their existing tooling to offer different variations. MTH offered multiple versions of the L3 and 4 Mohawks. I'd like an A1c B&A Berkshire. Use the tender from the Mohawk and clean up the existing boiler. The A1c's were called sports models as they did' have a lot of excess plumbing. Much cleaner looking.
