Lionel mechanisms : when & what ?

Motor number 2 is the assembly for the 2056 from 1952.  The other may be a 2025 from 1952 or, if the wheels are a little smaller, a 2026 motor..

I think Martin is correct on your locomotive #2 but I believe your locomotive #1 is definitely from a 1952 version of a Lionel #2025 or a #675 and not from a #2026 due to the location of the brushes.

Both have the same wheel diameter and wheels are not magnetized.

So, #1 is a Lionel #2025 or #675 and I get some informations on #675/2025.

I find this service manual for #2056.

The item you posted with the service manual refers to the reissue from a couple of years ago and is not like the one in your pictures...What do you need to know about it??

I didn't see diagrams for the 2056 (only a parts list), but that motor is very similar to the 675/2025 motor.

The first 2025 pictured in that link is the earlier version with the Baldwin drivers.  The 2025 that Henri has is the later (1952) version with solid wheels for which this link is also given in that table further down the page: http://www.postwarlionel.com/images/2025late.jpg.

Not also the different trailing truck.  Some parts are interchangeable but many are not.
