This may be a stupid questions but could you please give me the differences of these engines... GS 3, 4, 5, and 6? Is it the road number?

Yes, and lots of features too. You might try Googling Southern Pacific 4-8-4 Daylight steam locomotives and see what you come up with. Just my opinion but, there really isn't room here to list all the prototype differences between the GS-3, GS-4, GS-5, and GS-6 locomotives, not to mention the differences between the "as delivered" features & lettering, vs. the post 1946 features & lettering.
Let me take a crack at it.
GS-3 - 80” drivers and open cab. GS-4 - Double headlight and all weather cab. Slight difference in tender. GS-5 - a GS-4 with roller bearings (one Timken, the other Hyatt). GS-6 - back to 73” drivers, single headlight, no streamlining, but retains all weather cab and GS-4 tender.
Weaver sort of blew it on their GS-3 and -6. I have no idea how accurate the Lionel offerings will be - I fixed my Weaver GS-3 tender, and am quite happy.
Does that help? If it piques your interest, buy Bob Church’s Daylight 4-8-4 book - worth whatever you have to pay for it! Opinion.
Buy "Those Daylight 4-8-4's" by Robert Church. I picked up a copy for ~$30. Good resource and will answer most of your questions, and give you some nice pictures as modeling resources.
